How Taylor Swift’s Exes Made into Her Songs

Taylor Swift has proven time and time again that she is in a league of her own. Ever since she started out, she has given it her all. And just like with any artist out there, she gets her material from her personal experiences. In fact, some of her songs were inspired by her exes. Well, even singers can immortalize a relationship like other writers do. Let’s take a look at Swift’s popular songs and her exes that we should give credit to.

Back to December

With lyrics like, “So this is me swallowing my pride/ Standing in front of you saying, “Im sorry for that night”, it is hard not to know who Swift is referring to here. This one goes to Twilight alum, Taylor Lautner, who dated the singer back in the day. Unlike other songs where Swift gets a belated apology from her ex, this time it is her who is apologizing. To Lautner’s credit, he has nothing but nice things to say about his ex.

Dear John

From the title itself, we all know who this one was for. Swift dated John Mayer at one point but only for a short time. Mayer, who is known for being a serial dater, felt embarrassed by the song attributed to him. Well, Swift did not pull her punches on this one. The song had a line or two like this, “Dear John, I see it all now it was wrong/ Dont you think nineteens too young/To be played by your dark, twisted games/ When I loved you so?

I Knew You Were Trouble

Swift certainly poured her time and investments into making hit songs over the years. This one was linked to her time with One Direction alum, Harry Styles. In fact, Styles featured in several of Swift’s songs. In this case, this was attributed to the first time they crossed paths in 2013 but was written after their several breakups. With lines like “I heard you moved on from whispers on the street/ A new notch on your belt is all Ill ever be” it feels like Swift was expressing some pent up emotions here.

The Story of Us

This song perfectly encapsulates that awkward moment when you bump into your former flame. For Swift, it happened in an Awards show so it is hard to tell whether this song was for Joe Jonas or John Mayer. Either way, a lot of Swifties were quick to relate to The Story of Us especially with the lines, “Howd we end up this way? See me nervously pulling at my clothes trying to look busy/ And youre doing your best to avoid me.”

Begin Again

It seems that this song was written while Swift was dating Conor Kennedy. To her credit, it is a song that shows her picking herself up after a bad breakup and starting anew. We could not help but notice that subtle shade against Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal in the line, “He didnt like it when I wore high heels, but I do”

There is no doubt that making music is Swift’s passion and her skills in songwriting proves that she can tap into her experiences to write songs that hit the heart. We sure hope that the singer finds someone who will make her heart beat faster. Or just wait for a new album that talks about a former flame. Either way, we are sure that we will be readying our investment money for Swift’s albums in the long run. Can’t beat her songs that resonate with her fans.
